Loukoumades
I have always wanted to visit Aigaion, loukoumades shop in Panepistimiou Street, since I read on 2board, Athens airport magazine, that it makes the best loukoumades in Athens.

And finally I made it.

Oh, if you are wondering what loukoumades are, they are deep fried doughnuts made from fermented dough, and eaten typically with honey syrup and cinnamon powder. I have heard that there is exactly the same thing also in Turkey, by which no one would be surprised.

Although facing one of Athens' major streets, Aigaion is half underground and you might easily miss it if you are not looking for it.

I went down the stairs and paid at the till for 1 portion of loukoumades and took a seat.

Aigaion There were freshly fried 6 doughnuts with honey (I am not sure if it was 100% honey) and cinnamon sugar. There are also alternatives of chocolate syrup and kasseri cheese. Whichever flavour you choose, price is €3.20. You can top it up with crashed walnuts for €0.30, if you want.

First 2 were heavenly, but then, it's oiliness started to bother me. At the end, I was not enjoying anymore. Personally, a portion of 6 is too much for me and I would have happily shared one plate with someone else. I am not a big fan of deep-fried oily food, so, if you are, you can just ignore me.

One of the interesting features of Aigaion is the decor.

Not because it is nice, but because it is so retro. It definitely made me remind of Oriental (Middle Eastern) tea house than West European tea room. It is one of the things that the modern day Athens is losing. If you like old, nostalgic Athens, you won't regret to visit it.
