Psarotaverna O FAROS
O Faros

We visited here on a sunny Sunday afternoon of February 2009.

We live near here, and having noticed that here is better frequented then other restaurants nearby, decided to try it out.

O Faros
Having arrived at 2 o'clock, we could get a table fairly easily, but it was already 80% full and the people who arrived sometime after had problem in fitting in. Maybe there was more space in backside of the dining area (I did not check it), but seating away from the sea view would miss the point of eating in Piraiki entirely.
O Faros

As waiters did not bring menu to us for a while, I just snatched one lying next to the cashier. Then we needed to call the attention of waiters to order.

This might not be the best view in the world, but we did get a table with a view to the sea.

O Faros

Bread and lemon were brought to us fairly quickly by a very young lad, 12 year-old or so. This is clearly a family restaurant. (If we were in India, we would have had another idea, but we were not).

Bread was toasted, olive oil drizzled, and oregano sprinkled.

O Faros

The negative situation can be turned into something of positive. As the waiters left us unattended for a while, we had plenty of time to observe what the other people were eating and ordered the items looked popular.

O Faros
Almost every table had this: Faros special salad (€2.50 a portion and this is two-portion size). The generious dish consisted of lettuce, sliced tomatoes, sliced onions, dill, rocket leaves, radishes, capers, olives and pickled green peppers (not hot). It was fresh and made me happy.

O Faros

Then came the fried calamari (€5). This was frozen and there wasn't the usual choice between frozen and fresh, but not that we cared much. Perfectly fine.

O Faros
Seeing many tables ordering king prawn dishes, we did the same: Garides Saganaki (€18) from 'Faros Specials' section.

Eight fairly large head-on but shell-off prawns were lightly stewed with feta in tomato sauce. The tomato sauce enriched with prawn sauce was particularly moreish.

O Faros
For some reason, the fried potatoes (€2) appeared at the last after a prompt. They looked hand-cut and fresh, but not particularly tasty.

With a bottle of water and a bottle of Mythos, the total bill came to perfectly reasonable €36.

Update

Faros
We visited this place for the third time in December 2009.

It was a sunny Sunday afternoon. They were as busy as usual.

Salad and Tzatziki
Faros special salad for two (€2.50 x 2), tzatziki (€3.50), and grilled bread (€1 x 2).

Cucumber in tzatziki was almost grey in colour. I wished it to be fresher, to be honest. The other time, we ordered melitzanosalata and we did not like it either. Maybe we should not order this sort of dishes here.

The other stuff was fine.

midia tyganita
Deep fried mussels (€5). The yellow paste in the bowl was very mild mustard.

As this was the first time for me to eat deep-fried mussels, I cannot tell this dish was better or worse than average, but in itself it was quite enjoyable.

Psito Kalamari
Psito Kalamari (Grilled Squid) arrived at last.

As the kalamari they had were all huge, we ordered half portion. The bill tells us that it weighed 600 grammes and cost €15.60. Very good.

Ravani me pagoto
This time we ordered also a portion of sweet: ravani cake and a scoop of ice-cream (€2). Surprisingly high quality. Highly recommended.

We had also a bottle of water, a bottle of Kaiser, and a portion of fried potatoes, and the bill came to €37.
