Beulé Gate

Beulé gate

<Location> Acropolis, Athens, Attica

Most of the visitors come through this gate to enter (or go out from) the Acropolis. It was identified by French archaeologist Ernest Beulé in 1852, and it was named after him.

This is part of the fortification constructed after the devastation of Athens caused by the Heruli (a division of the Goths) in 267. The building material came from ruined constructions or from those destroyed by the Heruli. One of the monuments that provided the material is the choregic monument of Nikias (320/19 BCE), and its inscribed entabulature is recognisable. The foundation of Nikias' monument can be seen near the Theatre of Dionysos.
