Athenian Agora

Athenian Agora

The Athenian Agora seen from the Hephaisteion (or Theseion). The hill in front is the Acropolis.

The Athens' agora is reputed to be the best preserved example of the kind in Greece, but the ancient buildings easily recognisable to the amateur-archaeologists are few (maybe only the Hephaisteion and the reconstructed Stoa of Attalos). The "agora" primarily meant "market-place" (as well as in modern Greek), but it also functioned as political public space, just as the Latin equivalent "forum".
