In 267, a group of the Gothic people, the Heruli, sacked Athens, and many of the buildings were heavily damaged. After this tragic experience, a new fortification wall was constructed enclosing only small part of the ancient Athens.

This so-called "Post-Herulian Wall" was constructed reusing the materials from the destroyed building; as you can recognized from these photos.
