Byzantine Athens

After the sixth century, the Byzantine Athens was not an imporant city and does not have many remains of the epoque. Many of these scarse traces went lost under the Ottoman rule, during the war of Independence, and, after the Independence, by fervent and destructive archaeological investigations interested only in recovering the ancient Athens. The Parthenon, for example, was once a beautifully decorated church, although there is no trace of it.

These are some of the Byzantine (some of them are recent reconstruction) monuments of Athens.
