Omonia Square, together with Syntagma Square, is one of the two traffic hub of central Athens. To the round isle of Omonia, Athinas Street from Monastiraki Square, Stadiou and Panepistimiou (Venizelou) Streets from Syntagma, Pireos from Piraeus, Triti Septemvriou from Kifissia all flow in. Besides, it is the crossing point of the Metro Line 1 and Line 2, and many buses and trolleys stop here.
For the proximity to the wet market and wholesale shops, Omonia always has popular charm in contrast to the Syntagma Square which is close to Parliament Building, Embassies and wealthy Kolonaki area. Recent influx of immigrants from Middle East, China and Middle/East Europe has made Omonia area very international.
On the other hand, it is a centre of drug traffic in Athens. Drug dealers and drug dependents are quite often around. Some of the streets around are not safe for tourists even during the daytime.
