Ag. Dimitrios Loumbardhiaris
Ag. Dimitrios Lonbardiaris

Ag. Dimitrios Loumbardiaris, facade Saint Dimitris Loumbardhiaris church stands at the foot of Philopappou Hill. According to the information sheet on site it was constructed in the 9th century, but according to Barbar's guidebook, it dates back to the 16th century. Above is south side of the church seen from the road, and right is the façade.

The name "Loumbardhiaris" derives from the Greek word for cannon, Loumbadha. On 26 October 1656, the Turkish garrsion, led by anti-Christian commander Yusuf Aga, tried to cannon the Christians flocking to the church to celebrate the eve of the saint's day. Just before the attack, however, thunder struck the Turkish cannons and the commander died in this incident.

The building was restored in 1950's under the architect Pikionis; it was hard to tell to which extent was the restoration.

There were old frescoes (ca. 18th century) inside, but they were difficult to look because of the dimness.

Outer wall 2
This is the outer wall of the church, which looked quite original to me. As you see in the right, pieces of ceramics are inserted as decoration.
