Ancient Fountain
Fountain of Kalliroe
Fountain of Kalliroe
You see this fountain on your right if you walk donw the Apostolou Pavlou toward the south. It is commonly known as "Kalloroe Fountain", although it is not.

Under the Peisistratids (6th century BC.), the increase of Athenian population nacessitated the construction of new water conductors from the Hymettos. A fountain was constructed here. It is written that there is a shallow well after the entrance, but we couldn't see it, as it was closes (there is a fence as well as the gate).

At the beginning of the 20th century, German archaeologist Doerpfeld identified this as the Fountain of Kalloroe. Although this identification is now rejected, this place is still commonly referred as such.
