Theatre of Dionysos: Bema of Phaedrus

Theatre of Dionysos

<Location> Athens, Attika, Greece

The relief decorating the skene, dated to the second century CE.

Based on the dedicatory inscription incised on the steps in the middle (here you can see at the left end), it is called the "Bema of Phaedrus (or Phaidros)".

Bema of Phaedrus Phaidros

It depicts the life of Dionysos. The throne you can see at the right end is very similar to the ones we now find in the theatre. The giant like figure at the middle of the sequence was inserted at a later date.
