Souvlaki
(Meat or fish grilled on skewer)

In Greek, souvlaki literally means 'small skewer (small souvla)', but it is used more frequently for meat or fish cooked on skewer.
In the photo right are four pork souvlakia served with grilled tomato, pita bread, and sliced onion.
Souvlaki can be made also with fish meat, as far as it is cooked on souvlaki (skewer).

As souvlaki has come to mean also any meat cooked in skewer and wrapped in pita bread, when you want to indicate specifically the meat on skewer, you might have to resort to another term 'kalamaki'.
In this photo is a pork kalamaki sold as solo.

This is more complete pork souvlaki platter. Souvlakia are served with pita bread, fried potatoes, tomato and onion salad, and tzatziki sauce. This is one portion.

When I ordered a kalamaki, it came with fries and grilled pita bread in this taverna in Aegina.
