Palazzo dell'Orologio, Pisa
Palazzo dell'Orologio

One of the buildings facing the Piazza dei Cavalieri, Pisa.

The palace was made into this form between 1605 and 1608, uniting two existing two towers. It was used to house the sick or old knights of the St. Stefano Knighthood. The clock used to be installed in the bell tower of the Church of St. Stefano, and was moved here in 1696.

This building is very well known because in one of the pre-existing towers, Torre dei Gualandi (now right side of the building), was used to confine Ugolino della Gherardesca and his family, who were left to starve to death. Ugolino, losing his mind because of long starvation, is said to have eaten his grandchild's dead body. This episode is narrated by Dante in the Hell 33 of his Divine Comedy.

Now it is used as a part of the Scuola Normale Library.
