Hydra Town is the capital of the island and the only 'town' on the island.
It has an unusual townscape for an Aegean island because of many 19th-century mansions. The traditional townscape is well preserved and the maze-like web of narrow winding streets is very attractive.
Most of the cultural attractions - although not many - are concentrated in the town. Well worth the visit is small Ecclesiastical Museum, if you like icons. It is open from 10 to 14 o'clock except for Mondays.

I found the
Historical Museum and Archive of Hydra (in the photo right) rather disappointing and won't recommend them except to those who have genuine interest and already some knowledge about the modern history of Hydra. The information provided at the museum is rather poor and it was a baffling experience. The ticket costs €5 (in summer 2010).

Instead, I found the Ecclesiastical Museum pleasant enough, although it suffers from the poor information on the exhibits.
The opening hours are 10:00-14:00 (closed on Mondays). The entrance fee was €2 when I visited (in 2010).
