The capital of the island, Kos, is situated at the east side coast. The population is about 15,000. Attractive town with ancient, medieval and turkish elements mixed together.
The place was already inhabited since the Mycene period, but the construction of Kos town as the island's capital dates back only to B.C.366. It was damaged in 142 and 469, and was devastated in 554 by earthquakes. During the crusader period, it become a base of the order of St. John.

Compering other islands' capitals, Kos town is quite large. To move around, Convenient are the rental bicycles. Normal bicycle costs €2.50 and mountain bike costs €3-€3.50 a day (prices are of the summer 2006). The Asklepieion (sanctuary of Asklepios) is comfortably reacheable by bicycles; it takes about 20-30 min. depending on from where you start.
