General view of the island's capital, Mykonos Town.

The population is about 5,400, and the four fifths live in Mykonos Town. There is, however, a substantial number of the inhabitants that pass the winter elsewhere, as the island's main source of income is tourism during the summer.

Mykonos is used to be known as resort of the homosexual people, but now there is no such concentration as before. It is one of the most high-class resorts of Greece, and it was reported that the singer Madonna bought a villa on this island. Accordingly the prices here are higher comparing to those of the other islands around.
Another important role of the island is that of the base to visit the Delos island. Delos is specially protected archaeological site, and no one, except the guardians and the people engaged in excavations, can sleep over on the island. Many of the visitors to Delos should first come to Mykonos and stay one night, although there are some organised tours of Delos from nearby islands like Naxos during the summer.
